In the month of February, we had the pleasure of getting to know one of our newer members, Edmar Amaya, the founder of EDAM LAW. His journey into law and entrepreneurship is anything but conventional. We sat down with him to learn more about his unique path and the experiences that led him to where he is today.

Born in Colombia, Edmar moved with his parents to Danderyd, Sweden, when he was around five. As he grew older, his academic pursuits took him across the Atlantic, and in his late teens, he relocated to the U.S. to study mechanical engineering at Florida International University (FIU). After earning his degree, he moved to Philadelphia to work at the German company Heraeus Circuit Materials Division, where he spent several years as a lead research engineer specializing in microelectronics and semiconductor materials.

During his time at Heraeus, Edmar developed innovative materials to improve heat dissipation in microchips and enhance LED lighting technology. As of today, his contributions have earned him six U.S. patents. However, he also encountered challenges in intellectual property rights, realizing that employees often do not receive financial benefits from their inventions. This experience led him to shift careers. He moved to New Hampshire to study law, aiming to specialize in patent law and help inventors protect their rights. Today, Edmar is committed to ensuring that creators receive the recognition and compensation they deserve.
After completing his studies, Edmar moved back to Florida, drawn by the warm climate and
proximity to family. However, he quickly realized that the patent law market in Florida was challenging to break into, with a greater focus on immigration and civil litigation rather than intellectual property. To adapt, EDAM LAW expanded its practice to three main areas: Litigation Law, Immigration, and Entertainment Law.
Edmar founded EDAM LAW in Miami 14 years ago, starting in a small office in Little Havana. After four years, the firm moved to its current location for better accessibility. Today, the team consists of one full-time and two part-time employees, working alongside external attorneys—referred to as off-counsel—who provide specialized expertise in areas like personal injury. Looking ahead, Edmar envisions moderate growth, aiming to attract more international clients, particularly businesses seeking to patent their innovations in the U.S. While expansion is a goal, he remains cautious, recognizing that a larger firm comes with increased challenges. Throughout his career, he has emphasized the power of word-of-mouth referrals, which he sees as essential for attracting new clients.
A significant part of EDAM LAW’s work involves immigration law, particularly assisting clients with five-year E-2 investor visas, granted through a minimum of $100,000 business investment in order to hire American workers. Edmar helps clients worldwide, especially from Spain, Chile, Colombia, Australia, Sweden, and Germany, and has assisted many Swedish clients referred by the consulate and embassy due to his Swedish background.

A member of SACC Florida since 2024, Edmar aims to expand his network, connect with more Swedes, and explore the Swedish market in Florida. Amid recent political changes, many seek clarity on immigration laws, including the E-2 visa’s future, residence permits for children of married couples, and student visa regulations. With his expertise, Edmar is eager to engage with the chamber’s business community and provide guidance.
