Membership Spotlight: Skanska-Frederick Burman, EVP- Skanska Asset Management (Group)

As one of SACC Florida’s Corporate Members, Skanska plays an important part of our organization. In May, we sat down with Frederick Burman, currently the Executive Vice President of Skanska Asset Management (Group), based in Miami and SACC Florida Advisory Board Member.

Frederick was born in Linköping. His parents were diplomats which presented the opportunity for Fredrick to live in several countries growing up. He has been living in Florida since 2000. Frederick was with Ericsson between 2000-2006 as Head of Customer Finance & Treasury, North America and now with Skanska for 18+ years in various U.S and international management roles. This includes both leading public and private partnership mega infrastructure bids, complex commercial and project finance solutions, as well as business development. He explained how he works with different projects where he oversees the business operations from a board member vantage point. He visits Skanska’s public customers, meeting and negotiating with private investment partners and subcontractors, and inspecting the projects on site, all while traveling on a frequent basis. Frederick is part of a team overseeing Skanska’s infrastructure investment portfolio both located in the US and Europe. In the U.S, the portfolio has also included projects such as the Elizabeth River Crossing Tunnels in Virginia (now divested), where Frederick led both the development and divestment phases for Skanska, the I-4 Ultimate Highway in FL (see more below), as well as the La Guardia Airport Terminal B in NY (recently divested). The team also oversees private-public partnership (PPP) projects in Sweden, such as Karolinska Sjukhuset in Solna and has recently divested a hospital asset in the UK.

In the U.S, there are currently three employees working within the Asset Management team. He shared how Skanska, with himself in lead, has been a part of the Interstate-4 (I-4) Ultimate project in Orlando since day one of pre-qualifying and bidding, the project being a 36 km highway infrastructure PPP project. Frederick currently serves as Chairman for the I4 Mobility Partners investor board on this project. He further explained how these types of private-public partnership projects are unique in their bid and execution phases, including through shared risk allocation, the extensive legal documentation required and creative financing solutions needed. All to be able to successfully win the bids, then build and operate projects which in accordance with Skanska ABs current directive are typically sold after a few years into steady-state operations, post construction.

Since 2021 he also serves as a Member of SACC Florida’s Advisory Board. During our interview Frederick expressed how he believes in the importance of supporting Swedish organizations here in the U.S, which is one of the reasons as to why Skanska is one of SACC Florida’s Corporate Members. He appreciates that by being a Member he can take part in the valuable marketing events provided by SACC.
